NECIP FAZIL KISAKÜREK – CANIM İSTANBUL English Translation
Ruhumu eritip de kalıpta dondurmuşlar;
Onu İstanbul diye toprağa kondurmuşlar.
İçimde tüten bir şey; hava, renk, eda, iklim;
O benim zaman, mekan aşıp geçmiş sevgilim.
Çiçeği altın yaldız, suyu telli pulludur;
Ay ve güneş ezelden iki İstanbulludur.
Denizle toprak, yalnız onda ermiş visale,
Ve kavuşmuş rüyalar, onda, onda misale.
They melted my soul and froze it in a mould;
And placed it on the ground as Istanbul.
It is something that I yearn for in me; air, color, manner, clime;
Is my darling went beyond time and space.
Its flower is golden star, its water is flaming;
The Sun and The Moon are from Istanbul since time immemorial.
Sea and earth came together only in it,
And, dreams took a form in it, in it.
İstanbul benim canım;
Vatanım da vatanım…
Istanbul is my sweetheart darling;
My kingdom, my kingdom…
Tarihin gözleri var, surlarda delik;
Servi, endamlı servi, ahirete perdelik…
Bulutta şaha kalkmış Fatih’ten kalma kır at;
Pırlantadan kubbeler, belki bir milyar kırat…
Şahadet parmağıdır göğe doğru minare;
Her nakısta o mana: Öleceğiz ne çare?
Hayattan canlı ölüm, günahtan baskın rahmet;
Beyoğlu tepinirken ağlar Karaca Ahmet…
History has eyes, holes and hollows on city walls;
Cypress, statuesque cypress, a curtain for hereafter…
Grizzle horse of Fatih reared up in the cloud;
Diamond domes, maybe one billion carats…
Minaret towards the sky is a witness finger;
In each embroidery, that meaning: We will die, only that?..
Death is more living than life, mercy is more dominant than sin;
Karacaahmet cries while Beyoğlu cavorts.
O manayı bul da bul!
İlle İstanbul’da bul!
Find that meaning, find it!
Surely, find it in Istanbul!
Boğaz gümüş bir mangal, kaynatır serinliği;
Çamlıca’da, yerdedir göklerin derinliği.
Oynak sular yalının alt katına misafir;
Yeni dünyadan mahzun, resimde eski sefir.
Her aksam camlarında yangın çıkan Üsküdar,
Perili ahşap konak, koca bir şehir kadar…
Bir ses, bilemem tambur gibi mi, uda gibi mi?
Cumbalı odalarda inletir katibi mi…
Bosphorous is a silver brasier, boils coolness;
In Çamlıca, depth of heaven is on earth.
Playing waters are guests on the ground floor of docks.
He is grieved for the new world, an old embassador on the painting on the wall.
Every evening, Uskudar that it starts a fire on its glasses,
Wooden haunted mansion, as big as a city…
A sound, I cannot be sure, is it like a tanbur, an oud?
In oriel rooms, groans the “Katibim” …
Kadını keskin bıçak,
Taze kan gibi sıcak.
Its woman is like a sharp knife,
Warm like a fresh blood,
Yedi tepe üstünde zaman bir gergef isler!
Yedi renk, yedi sesten şayisiz belirişler…
Eyüp oksuz, Kadıköy süslü, Moda kurumlu,
Adada rüzgar, ucan eteklerden sorumlu.
Her şafak Hisarlarda oklar çıkar yayından
Hala çığlıklar gelir Topkapı sarayından.
Ana gibi yar olmaz, İstanbul gibi diyar;
Güleni söyle dursun, ağlayanı bahtiyar…
On the Seven Hills, time tambours an embroidery.
Numerous appearings from seven colors, seven sounds…
Eyüp is orphan, Kadıköy is fancy, Moda is haughty,
Wind in the island is in charge of flying skirts,
Every dawn, from fortresses, arrows leave bows,
Screams still come from Topkapı Palace.
There isn’t a loving like a mother, there isn’t a land like Istanbul;
Not to mention its laughter, even there teary is happy.
Gecesi sümbül kokan
Türkçe’si bülbül kokan,
That its night smells like hyacinth,
That its Turkish is like a nightingale,
